The Smithe – wood beam restoration

A new building in the heart of the city inherently comes with steps that need to be taken before construction can commence. Last summer, the previous building on Smithe and Cambie was carefully deconstructed. The building was nearly 100 years old and contained beautiful wooden beams spanning across the tall ceilings. In efforts to preserve some history of the building, we made the decision to strategically remove the beams from the structure so they could be reclaimed and used as a feature in the new building.

In total, about 70 fir timbers were saved and brought to Western Reclaimed Timbers in the Fraser Valley. Here, the beautiful antique timber was sorted, cleaned, and trimmed so it can be used for new buildings, furnishings and other projects.

Six of the very best timbers have been set aside for Boffo to incorporate at The Smithe. Our intentions are to explore options to use this wood as part of our amenity space furnishings. We love the idea of bringing back a portion of the fir to reside in the same place it lived for all of those years.
