Spring fever – expert decor tips to ready your condo for spring

The winter frost and snow have melted and the signs of spring are starting to blossom everywhere. This season is a time of renewal, rebirth; a time for new beginnings. What better way to welcome spring than by making a few décor changes in your condo? West coast Condo Attended the 47th annual BC home + Garden Show at BC Place Stadium (February 12-25), to glean some insider spring décor ideas from local award-winning designers.

“The easiest way to bring spring into your home and revitalize the mood, is through bright splashes of color, whether that in your throws, pillows or art. Then, balanced it our wit some organic accents, such as plants,” says Jamie Banfield Design.

Another simple fix, says Kristina Hibbs of Marie Joy Design, are decorative pillows. It’s easy to give your home frequent updates by having a “pillow wardrobe” for various seasons, just like you do for your clothing. “This is such an easy way to change up your condo without spending too much,” says Hibbs.

Kendall Ansell, interior designer and founder of Kendal Ansell Interiors likes to welcome spring into her bedroom. “Every season, I like to change up my bedding. In the spring, I choose white, replacing my dark winter quilts and bedding, which can feel and look heavy,” says Ansell.

Here these talented local designers reveal more of their top spring décor tips.

1. Coffee table spread

“The cheapest and easiest way to brighten up your space is doing a fresh spread on your coffee table, or hutch, or even a tray on your couch if you have a smaller. So layering with a fun coffee table book about travel, cooking, or something you love adds a fun detail to your space. Then add a candle – we love Vancouver Candle Company for their simplistic and chic packaging. Finally, some fresh florals, this can be simple eucalyptus, which we love for the smell as well, or more elegant roses, that’s the fun; you can change it up each week.”

2. Colour coding

“If you have a smaller space and you’re comfortable getting your hands a little dirty, paint your baseboards and casings in the same color as the space. This creates a sense of unison and the illusion of larger space. The final detail is to add some fresh linen drapes to your windows, to let that spring light filer through and often your space up.”

3. Layer upon layer

“Layering different textures, patterns and tones adds depth to any couch, and you can always switch them up and use them on your bed as well.”

4. A lick of paint

“Paint is a quick fix. The mood of a room can change dramatically with a can of paint. Choose whites, off whites and creams for a light and airy look. Then, introduce soft blue hues, classic greys and hints of yellow to freshen up and bring life to your room after the dark wintry months. Adding an accent hue works really well together with your white walls; instantly livening up your space.”

5. Lighten up

“Break out of your winter rut by replacing your darker accent pieces, such as canisters, candle holders and vases, with brighter and lighter ones.”

6. Springtime scenes

“Carve out a sunny nook to refresh and recharge with a mini tabletop green scape. Or rejuvenate a spare dresser, bookshelf , sofa table or walls with some accent art, such as frames photographs or art work showcasing your favorite spring scenes. A symmetrical grouping of printers turns a black wall space into a conversation piece. With a few simple supplies, you can make a series of prints like there, costumized to your color and style preferences.”

7. Ambient lighting

“Lighting creates atmosphere. Take your sparkly Christmas lights and repurpose them into a different setting. String them to your deck or vertically from the top to bottom of your balcony to create ambience.”

8. Bring in the outdoors

“Bring Mother Nature inside. Hanging herb gardens on the ceiling or wall or adding cluster of small pots of greenery on a side table are easy and low-maintenance ways to add freshness to any room without any fuss.”
