Profile – HUB Cycling

HUB Cycling is an established non-profit organization, established in 1998 that works to improve cycling conditions in Metro Vancouver by providing bicycle education workshops, and programs. They work with businesses, governments and community organizations to create solutions that advocate bike usage as part of Vancouver’s lifestyle. Their goal is to get more people cycling, more often.

The HUB team experienced some incredible success in 2017 including a complete street upgrade of the Burrard Street Corridor, paving of the Arbutus Greenway, improved urban standards in the City of Surrey, and increased Translink funding for municipal bicycle infrastructure projects. They are currently working on several initiatives such as ensuring accessibility of major bridges for bicycles and pedestrians and supporting the integration of cycling and related improvements to commercial streets and business districts across Metro Vancouver.

not just bike racks report

HUB recently collaborated with the Urban Development Institute (UDI) to produce a report called “Not just bike racks: end-of-trip cycling amenities in Vancouver real estate”. The report provides an industry review on end of trip facilities in new office, mixed-use and multi-unit residential buildings. Based on feedback from architects, engineers, developers and key stakeholders, this report presents local best practices, bylaw and policy by region, and industry suggestions illustrating how municipalities can foster building design and amenity choices that are fit for a green and active city.

Three featured residential projects that go above and beyond current bike-friendly requirements include Bosa Properties’ Chinatown rental and commercial building, Onni’s Canvas condominium project, and our very own newest downtown project, The Smithe.

Bike to Work Week is one of HUB’s annual flagship events – taking place this week from May 28th – June 3rd 2018. Last year broke records with the amount of people who joined throughout the city – 17,000 participated, including 2,100 people who had never biked to work before! You can register online – registered cyclists have the chance to win prizes and when bike trips are logged throughout the week it will allow HUB to track the routes and work with local leaders to improve cycling infrastructure in your communities and roadways.

Visit HUB’s website to learn more about their organization, find out how you can get involved, attend one of their bicycle education classes and more.
