Shanghai-based construction firm WinSun Decoration Design Engineering has built the tallest 3D-printed structure in the world: a five-story residential building.
Currently on display at China’s Suzhou Industrial Park, the “ink” used to create the building comes from a mixture of recycled construction waste, glass fiber, steel, cement and special additives. The massive printer that did the job is 22 feet tall, 33 feet wide and 492 feet long.

Speaking to 3D-printing blog 3Ders, WinSun CEO Ma Yi He said the sheer size of the printer allows for a 1,000 per cent increase in production efficiency:
The company estimates that 3D printing technology can save between 30 and 60 per cent of building materials and shortens production times by 50 to even 70 per cent, while decreasing labor costs by 50 up to even 80 per cent.
Alongside the apartment building, WinSun also printed a three-story, 11,840-square-foot mansion, for which they’ve already sold 10 units at a cost of $161,000 USD per to a Taiwanese real estate company.

The Egyptian government, meanwhile, has has ordered 20,000 affordable single-story houses from WinSun — each of which can be printed in a single day
